Stay Vigilant

Dear sisters and brothers in Christ,

I pray that you are blessed. My time up North was very relaxing. While I was a week early for Fall color and the Northern Lights, it was still beautiful. It is so nice not to have phone calls or emails (until you get back) and nothing on a schedule that can’t be ignored. I did make it to Tahquamenon Falls, but only to the lower section since it was so crowded. I spent most of my time hiking in Picture Rocks NLS, doing a bit of photography and just enjoying the peace and quiet of Mother Nature. And perhaps best of all, when I was unpacking I realized I hadn’t taken a single antacid.

As we move into Fall many are anxious to get back to church ministries and activities. Soon our outdoor solution will no longer be viable. While I appreciate the desire and need to continue to socialize, I am also very aware of the warnings that there could be a new surge, especially if we let our guard down too quickly. I notice that there are a few people coming to church who are no longer wearing masks. This is NOT acceptable! Also, please pay attention to the markings on the pews and try your best to keep 6’ between yourself and the person or persons beside you.

We have also received messages from other parishioners voicing their concern. People want to feel safe when they come to church, and they have a right to do so. No matter what your personal beliefs are about the virus we will continue to follow diocesan guidelines. I am also concerned that the news coming from the health experts and CDC are warning that there very well could be a new surge, and this is made worse by the fact that many people have gotten used to lowering their guard and are understandably weary of doing these things.

Please keep an eye on the bulletin for news of ministries and activities that are starting up. We have already started bridge classes. The Young At Heart ministries are making plans for which activities they will be able to do inside. The women’s prayer and book groups are also making plans. We are also looking at a way to offer Pickle Ball if done in small numbers, as well as, a bible study. If you have other ideas for ministries that can be done within the social distancing guidelines or online pass them along to the office at office@stalphonsusgr.org or 451-3043.

Finally, please keep our young people in prayer who are preparing for Confirmation on October 14th. Since we have such a large group, attendance is limited to their families. However, we will be live-streaming the service for those who would like to participate and see these young people take this next step in their faith journey. I regret that we will not be able to have a Senior Prom this year, as the young people last year truly seemed to enjoy it.

In the Redeemer, Fr. Rick
