The Music Ministry at St. Alphonsus includes numerous volunteers and is an extension of our community. They are a group of dedicated people who believe that through prayer and song they can lead the congregation to sing God’s praises. All of the music groups meet from September through June. Each group has its own schedule of rehearsals and Masses. As a member of the music ministry, you’ll have many opportunities to sing, play, and perform. Not only do we participate in weekly Liturgies, but also in special services – Missions, Holy Days and a variety of other events, depending on the group. Cantors and small groups continue throughout the summer.
St. Alphonsus’ Music Groups
Adult Choir: High School and up. We are always in need of adult singers to enhance our liturgy. You do not need to read music, just love singing and are able to carry a tune! All of our music is on Planning Center Online so you are able to view it and hear it before you come to rehearsal. We meet every Wednesday from 7:00 to 8:00pm, and from 8:00 to 8:30pm for those who have special requests to go over parts. We sing at all 11:00am Masses and special liturgies.
Adult Contemporary Ensemble: High School and up. We sing traditional and contemporary music in unison and parts and are accompanied by instrumentalists. We meet on Saturdays at 4:00pm and sing at the 5:15pm Mass.
Adult Bell Choir: This is a unique and fun ensemble that rings bells! Some basic music experience is helpful, but not required. Rehearsals are held on Wednesdays from 5:45 to 6:45pm. This choir plays at one Mass each month.
Cantors: High School and up. This is a ministry for those with strong singing voices and an ability to lead the congregation in song.
Children’s Choir: Grades 1st through 8th. We meet every Thursday from 4:30–5:15pm. Children study basic vocal techniques, learn many songs and sing on the first Sunday of the month at the 9:00am Mass. Rehearsals will include practice for a Christmas Pageant to be performed on Christmas Eve at 3:30, a half hour before the 4:00pm Mass.
Instrumentalists: All instrument players are welcome. Please call the Minister of Music, Gayle Pohl, at 616.913.4408 for more information.
